The annual Staff vs Year 13 Students competition was a surprise upset, where students beat staff for the first time. With basketball and hockey tournament wins, The 2020’s Year 13 group already had plenty of sporting prowess.
Game 1 – Futsal
It was a physical and energy sapping game. The teachers opened the scoring, through some quick movement by Mr Doody, supported by the tireless Mr O. The students made full use of their superior fitness and larger substitute bench and looked the better team. Field Hockey keeper Tim Muli was immense defending the students’ goal. The teachers managed to hold the score at 1-all. However in the final minutes, field-hockey captain, Jono McDonald completed a skillful ‘one-two’ with fellow hockey forward, Milan to take the victory. Final score 2 to 1.
Game 2 – Netball
The students shot out of the gates in the first quarter, maintaining a 100% shooting record to take a five goal early lead. Rebecca Mark and Shanese Sproull dominated the attacking quarter. Some positional switches and mid quarter substitutions helped the teachers catch up to be only a behind by only 9 to 6 at the end of the third quarter. The students then raced away with the game in the final quarter to finish 15 to 7.
Game 3 – Volleyball
The teachers turned up to play. They had a bench full of substitutions, and a lot of experience to call on. Mr McDonald showed plenty of guile at the net, Mr Jayasuriya demonstrated his silky setting skills, and Mr Sextus brought his football talent. However it was Shanese Sproull who starred for the students with her lethal serving. It came down to a match point serve, with a a certain member of school management given the ball. His serve went under the net to give students a narrow win 25 to 23.
Game 4 – Basketball
The teachers got off to an early lead, and were looking comfortable. Mr Jayasuriya was strong from the 3-point line. However the teachers didn’t have the teamwork and familiarity of the student team, and their lead slowly eroded. Some last minute clutch plays by Deputy Head Boy Timote Muli won the students the game 16 to 13.
In a reversal of 2019’s staff vs students sports week, 2020s student group made it four from four to win the Black shield. Mr Doody was disappointed with the narrow losses. “The teachers aren’t getting slower, it’s just the students got faster and were more talented this year.” he reported.
